Israeli group offers incentives for new settlers

The Jordan Valley regional council will over the next few weeks launch a promotion aimed at increasing the population of settlements that have over the past year experienced a high rate of departure.
Ha'aretz
Within the framework of the promotion, families volunteering to repopulate the settlements for a period of time lasting between three and six months will be exempt from paying apartment rental, water rates and council tax.
The council intends to finance the families' stay in the settlement in the belief that it will help to strengthen the resolve of the residents.
In the past year, 53 families - some 8 percent of the Jewish population - have left the valley, while only 22 families have joined.

| They're completely ignoring Powell's speech! I'd be surprised if this is allowed to continue. Sharon won't like it but I bet we put enough pressure on Israel to stop this. Whatever pressure we eventually place on Israel regarding halting the settlements, the pressure is clearly on Arafat in a very public way. I wish Arafat would resign and then we'd have to swallow our own medicine ie. Hezbollah. |
