Posted by gato on Friday, January 25 @ 21:29:32

Serge Schmemann, in a review in the NY Times, writes that Lewis's latest book on the Muslim world is a disappointment, too filled with generalizations and unsubstantiated speculations (such as the theory that the absence of polyphonic music--music made up of multiple voices--in the Muslim world is related to its inability to modernize).

AMMAN, Jordan -- To hear the Israeli government tell it, the reason behind the enduring conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people is one man — Yasir Arafat. Hence, Israel's approach to the problem is confining the Palestinian leader to his Ramallah headquarters, destroying the symbols of the Palestinian Authority he leads and gradually reoccupying its territory.

JERUSALEM - The American ambassador to Israel was speaking to Israeli college students and, it is safe to assume, had no intention of sparking an uproar.
This is what Ambassador Daniel C. Kurtzer told the students Wednesday: They could push for a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He noted, too, that Americans had managed to change government policy with street protests and by taking over the offices of college deans.

Speaking in Paris after the two men had met with French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, Burg said that if the world ignored the Middle East, which was currently inflamed, "it will ultimately be confronted with the same problems, from Paris to New York."

On 13 January Yasser Arafat addressed the 4,000 residents of Rashidiyeh refugee camp in Lebanon on the 37th anniversary of his Fatah movement. "We will remain steadfast and make sacrifices until the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and until the refugees return to their homes," he said. He may as well have been addressing the 3.4 million Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza -- so far and so near does he revolve to and from them.

BRUSSELS -- On the way back from Kabul, I passed through Pakistan, the Persian Gulf, London and Belgium, where I had a variety of talks with Arab and Muslim journalists and business people and Muslim community leaders in Europe. All of them were educated, intelligent and thoughtful — and virtually none of them believed that Osama bin Laden was guilty.

Settler Population Growth Slowed Since Start of Intifada

According to Israeli Interior Ministry figures, there were 203,067 Jews living in the West Bank and Gaza at the end of December 2000, compared to 213,672 at the end of December 2001 - a rise of 10,605 people (5.22 percent). Last year's increase was significantly lower than in each of the last six years, each of which saw an 8 percent rise. This drop in the rate of growth appears to stems from a substantial decrease in the number of Israelis who decided to join the settlements.
